Online Project Management And Task Collaboration Options

The Internet has changed many things about doing business, one of them is the ability to collaborate long distance with different people involving various tasks. For example, on a recent project that involves search engine optimization (SEO), I need to collaborate with a number of writers and site developers, many located in different geographical locations. I needed to find a good Online Project Management and Task Collaboration software that enables one person to assign a task to another, and track the process and timing.

A quick Google search for “Online Project Management” returned a few “Sponsored Links” (paid search listing or advertisement) and 25 million listing (organic SERPs).

Clarizen- was an advertisement that I first clicked on. The Landing Page I arrived at had advertisement messages (benefits and testimonial) and a big sign up button. I could not find more information on this option from this page, and thus was not motivated to sign up or try it.

Basecamp- at 1st position in organic listing with enticing title and description message, was convincing enough to check out. Their website was even more convincing with easy and clear navigation options, well-presented case studies, and my favorite, the video tutorial of the various enterface elements, like to-do-list, dashboard, etc. They offer 30 day free trial and reasonable pricing packages starting at $24/month.

But I needed to make a better educated decision by examining other options and listening to what others think about these tools. Plus, I needed something simpler since I only have the one project to manage, for now.

Zoho- moving down the list, Zoho was at the second position in SERPs on Google. Like Basecamp, the website for Zoho was nicely designed and easy to navigate; but, they didn’t have video demos of the tool, only pages with graphical view and text explanation of the various system features. A big attraction of Zoho was that the first project is free with unlimited users. Browsing more through the site, I stopped by Zoho Blogs and found a post by a happy Zoho user who was blogging about his experience, which others didn’t share as they mentioned in their comments, which lead me to a new Web Based Project Collaboration Software called DeskAway.

DeskAway – has all the features I needed, good reviews, sleek interface design, good video tutorials, and reasonable pricing, with the first 3 projects FREE. I signed up, with ease, created the first project and I’m on my way to giving DeskAway a test drive.

If you have any experience with these options or others that you like to share, feel free to leave a comment!

  • Hi Lamees,

Thanks for considering Clarizen as an option for your online project management needs and sorry you did not have the experience you would have expected.
If anything, many of our customers can attest, we listen and respond to our users swiftly and therefore would be very interested in getting more specific feedback on your experience. From the above paragraph I could not understand where we fell short.

    Cheers,

  • Gil,

Thanks for stopping by my blog and listening to my feedback. I guess my frustration with Clarizen came mainly from the landing page (the link I have in my blog). It’s more like a flyer than a landing page.. I suggest you improve it by including navigation options on the page so visitors can find more information on the product. I expect most visitors coming to this page from search engines are in “search mode” so help them with this task.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Lamees,

I’m not sure if you’re still on the lookout for a project management/collaboration tool for your business, but I think TeamWork Live might meet your needs nicely: http://www.teamworklive.com

In addition to all the regular project management and project collaboration features, below are some features that I think might be especially useful to you since you are a web design firm are:
    1. You can attach files and images to the task itself, which makes it easy to share designs with clients.
    2. If you are working on a copy with other team members, TeamWork Live will automatically save a new version each time the copy has been modified. You can also compare changes between versions to quickly see what was changed.
    3. As you communicate with a user about a task or document, the communication is automatically linked to the task or document. This way you always have easy access to all the information and related communication about a task when you are working on a task.

We have a quick tour that highlights many of TeamWork Live’s features: http://www.teamworklive.com/go/tour

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions.
